5 Mistakes Brides Make When Dress Shopping

We understand that wedding planning can be stressful, but finding your wedding gown shouldn't be! So to be sure that your dress shopping experience is as seamless as a perfectly tailored gown, we listed 5 common mistakes to avoid when searching for your wedding gown: Spacesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Bringing EVERYONE to Your Appointment. SSpacesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssPACE Yes, you want to bring your whole bridal party and all your family members to your appointment to help you find the most important dress you'll ever wear. However, having 10 different opinions can actually bring you farther away from finding "the one."  Most brides find it helpful to have only those whose opinions really matter to them in the appointment, which tend to be their mom, sister, or their best friend. Bring that person whose opinion you value, and can tell you like it is! If you do choose to bring your entourage, be sure to remember that YOU are the one wearing that gown, and YOU have to absolutely LOVE it. Spacesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Trying on too many dresses. Spacesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Despite what we see on TV or know about finding the right dress, most brides actually try on between 5-12 gowns before they find the one. And with the right consultant working with you, the perfect dress might be the first few you actually try on! The most common mistakes made by a bride is finding the perfect gown she loves, but is not ready to the end the shopping experience and make the commitment. This becomes dangerous because the bride becomes overwhelmed with the endless options and forgets what she originally set out to find. Spacesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss When you are first starting, it is a good idea to try on different dresses to figure out the silhouette you love most on your figure. The bride might have an idea of what she likes, but preferences might change once you put on a few different styles. But once you narrow it down and know that you would never wear a ball gown or a fit and flare style, or whatever it might be on your wedding day, then start trying on dresses that you would want to wear on your big day. Spacesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Keep your style, comfort level, and venue in mind when finding the gown.  At The Bustle, we like to keep the process simple and fun for the bride, so we do a brief interview at the beginning of the appointment to get to know you, the wedding, and how you want to look on your wedding day! MAKE AN APPOINTMENT Spacessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Wanting the Wrong Size. Spacesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Try not to fixate on the size of the wedding gown, but on how your measurements are compared to the designer's size chart. Keep in mind that wedding gown sizes typical run 1 to 2 sizes smaller than our normal street clothing. And planning on losing weight before you wedding day? No worries. Any dress can be taken in up to 2-4 sizes down without affecting the look of the dress, and most dresses can be let out one full size, so you are allowed to fluctuate in weight before you start alterations. Don't wait until the last minute to find your gown because you were planning to lose weight first! (See our Dress Timeline blog post).Go with your consultant's recommended size, which tend to be the size that currently fits your body. And if the dress doesn't fit when it comes in, don't freak out! There's always something we can do, such as ordering more fabric from the designer, or adding a corset back. Spacesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Trying on Dresses that are Over Budget. Spacesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Make sure you are absolutely sure of your budget for your wedding gown before hitting the stores. This can help prevent disappointment and heartbreak, such as loving a dress you tried on, but can't afford. The Bustle is mindful and respectful of the bride's budget before pulling dresses for her. And yes, if you see a gorgeous gown on a mannequin that you JUST have to try on, we are happy to pull it for you, but we also keep you informed about the price before getting you in the dress :) Spacesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Buying a Dress You Don't Love. Spacessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss This is the biggest mistake any bride should avoid! Don't settle for a dress because someone influenced you to purchase it instead of listening to your heart. This is one of the reasons why it is important to choose the people you invite to your appointment wisely.   If you are caught between two dresses, really ask yourself these few question: "Which dress would I miss more if I couldn't have one or the other?" "Which one do I feel most beautiful in?" "Do I feel like a bride in this dress?" "In 20 years, which dress would I be happy to see in my photographs?" If you find yourself thinking about that one dress or coming back to it in the appointment, that one is probably your wedding gown!
